40+ Birthday Invitation Wording Examples to Copy (2026)

Choose wording that fits the party you're planning. These 41 examples cover funny missions for children's birthdays, invitations for adults and short WhatsApp messages.

The examples are fictional. Names, venues and dates illustrate the wording; they aren't venue recommendations. Replace them with your details and fill in any missing address, contact or link. Check the time, weekday and reply deadline before sending.

What the wording must not leave out

Make the birthday person's name, date, time and address easy to find. Mention a dress code if you want guests to wear something particular. For replies, give a deadline and a way to respond; "just let me know" leaves the timing open.

Wording for children's parties (the parents invite)

When you're inviting other parents, tell them what their child is invited to do: dress up as a dinosaur, join a unicorn party or play in the garden. If costumes are optional, say so. I'd put that beside the theme so a parent doesn't have to ask whether they need to buy one.

Come to Sofia's birthday party. She's turning 5 and wants to celebrate with her best friends.

Funny wording for children, as a mission or a mini dialogue

For a funny invitation, I'd start with a mission: find the treasure or gather a team for cake. Give it an objective and tell the agents where to report. If you'd rather use a short dialogue, let two characters ask each other about the party. These are original examples to adapt to the games you're planning.

Secret mission: Luca is turning 6.
Objective: cake, balloons and one long chase around the garden before dark.
The team gathers on Saturday, 12 September, at 4:00 pm, 14 Zorilor Street, Ploiești.
Kit: a cape and shoes you can run in.
Tell me by 5 September whether your agent is joining the mission.

Maia is turning 7 and needs a team of treasure hunters.
Departure: Sunday, 4 October, 11:00 am, Fantezia play garden, Timișoara.
Return: 2:00 pm, with pockets full of sweets.
Confirm by 27 September, so we have a map for every child.

"Did you hear? Vlad is turning 5."
"How are we celebrating?"
"Meet us on Saturday, 11 April, at 4:00 pm, at Curcubeu hall in Cluj-Napoca."
"What should we bring?"
"Enough energy to run around. Vlad has the rest covered. Let us know by 4 April."

For Vlad's dialogue, let your child choose who asks the questions and who answers. Read it together and change any line they wouldn't say. Keep the promises realistic: take out the treasure or sweets if you aren't planning to have them at the party.

Adapting the joke without hiding the date, the place and the request to confirm

"See you at the secret base" doesn't tell a parent where to go. Put the code name beside the full address. After writing the joke, look for the birthday child's name, date, time and place. Move them onto separate lines if they're hard to spot among the dialogue.

Operation "Zoe turns 8" begins on Saturday, 26 September, at 5:30 pm.
Base: Astro Kids hall, 3 Mare Street, Iași.
Password at the door: "happy birthday".
Tell me by 19 September whether your agent is coming, so we know how many missions to prepare.

You can keep the joke in the reply request: "report back by 19 September", followed by a contact for replies. "Report to base" gives no deadline. If you've set a finish time, put it beside the start time.

Wording for an eighteenth birthday

Write these invitations in your own voice, using words you'd say to your friends. If "the party of my life" feels a bit much, try "I'd love to celebrate with you". You can keep the joke for your friends and use a quieter opening when you're inviting relatives to the same party.

I'm turning 18. Let's celebrate together, Saturday 12 September, 8:00 pm, at Terasa Panoramic, Sibiu.

18 years old, finally an adult (on paper at least). See you on Saturday, 4 July, 8:30 pm, Club Loft, Cluj-Napoca.

Funny wording for adults

Pick a joke you'd say out loud to the people you're inviting. If you can think of someone it might embarrass, save it for a message to close friends. I'd make myself the subject of the joke and leave the other guests out of it.

I'm turning 40 and, to everyone's surprise, I can still dance. Come and check for yourself, Saturday 5 September, 7:00 pm, Restaurant Vila Verde, Pitești.

I've reached the age where "one more drink" means my back will have something to say about it tomorrow. We're celebrating anyway. 30 August, 8:00 pm, Central summer garden, Arad.

You can invite friends without a joke, too. The next two examples offer a choice between an evening at a terrace and a barbecue at home. Keep the bit about borrowed chairs only if it fits your plans. You don't need a funny story to ask people over for dinner.

Andrei is turning 40. Saturday, 12 September, from 8:00 pm, at Terasa Belvedere. Come as you are and stay as late as you like.

I'm turning 40 and celebrating in the garden, with a barbecue, a speaker and chairs borrowed from three neighbours.
Saturday, 12 September, from 6:00 pm, 14 Zorilor Street. Bring something warm, it cools down in the evening.
Tell me by 5 September whether you are coming and whether you are bringing someone.

Elegant wording for adults

For a dinner where you'd like guests to dress up, put that request beside the time and venue. "Please join me" works without an elaborate introduction. Choose an example based on who's sending the invitation: the birthday person or someone in their family.

I'd love you to join me for my 50th birthday, Saturday 12 September, 7:00 pm, at Restaurant Panoramic. Please confirm by 1 September.

With great pleasure, I invite you to my 40th birthday celebration. Friday, 25 September, 7:00 pm, Salonul Regal, Iași.

I'm turning 30 and would love to celebrate with the people I love. Saturday, 4 July, 6:30 pm, Conacul Heldsdorf, Brașov.

My husband is turning 45 and I want to give him a lovely surprise. Join us on 18 October, 7:30 pm, at [venue and address]. Please keep it a secret.

For a more formal birthday dinner, the practical details read better on separate lines than inside one long sentence:

When adapting a family invitation for yourself, change "we" to "I" throughout. If the family is hosting, keep "we" and name the person whose birthday you're celebrating in the first sentence.

Wording for surprise parties

Start with the date and the time guests need to be at the venue. Name the person you're surprising and ask everyone to keep the plan secret. If you also give the birthday person's arrival time, make it clear which time applies to whom. In the first example, guests arrive by 7:30 pm and Andrei arrives at 8:00 pm. I'd include both only if that helps people understand the plan; the earlier time is the one they need to act on.

Be at Restaurant Panoramic by 7:30 pm. Andrei turns 50 on 12 September and has no idea; he arrives at 8:00 pm. Please do not mention anything, not even as a joke.

We're planning a surprise party for Ioana, who turns 45 on 20 March and doesn't suspect a thing.
Come to Terasa Belvedere, where the doors close at 7:30 pm.
Keep the plan to yourself until that evening, and let me know through the invitation page if you can come.

On Sunday, 4 October, we're surprising our mother for her 60th birthday.

Send the invitation only to people who should know about the surprise. Before posting the link in the family group, check whether the birthday person is a member. Ask guests to reply directly to you or through the invitation page, and give them a deadline. If someone calls to say they're coming, record that answer with the others so it doesn't get lost among your conversations.

Wording for milestone birthdays (organised by the family)

If you're organising a parent's or grandparent's birthday, you can send the invitation from the family. Name the person you're celebrating and choose words you'd be comfortable saying in front of them. When adapting these examples, check the family relationship as well as the age; "our mother" may need to become "my father".

Please join us to celebrate our mother's 70th birthday with the people she loves. Sunday, 21 June, 1:00 pm, Restaurant Select, Iași. Your presence would mean the world to her.

Short wording for WhatsApp

For the WhatsApp group, the message can be shorter than the full invitation: who, when, where, plus the link with all the details and the confirmation.

Choosing the tone for family, colleagues and mixed groups

Think about how you'd invite each person over the phone. With a friend, you might start with their first name and "I'd love you to come". For someone you address more formally, you can use their full name and "Please join us". Then check what the party calls for. If you're asking guests to dress up for dinner, include that request in the message to friends as well. Knowing you well doesn't tell them what you've planned.

Say you're turning 40 and inviting forty people: your parents and two uncles, twelve colleagues and the rest friends from school. I'd keep one invitation with the same details for everyone and change the message I send with it. You might tell your family why you'd like to get everyone together, invite colleagues directly and save the shared joke for school friends. If the time changes, you have one page to correct. Then send the update to every group where you shared the link.

Read the message aloud as if you were talking to the most formal person on your list. If you stumble over a line or feel you'd have to explain the joke, change it before sending. Keep the name and party details identical in every group's message. For colleagues you address by their first names, keep that familiar greeting. You don't need to switch to a formal salutation just because you're also inviting family.

Asking for confirmations and updating details after you send

Put the deadline beside the reply request: "Please let us know by 5 September if you can come." Say where to reply, by message or through the invitation page. Ask guests to tell you about allergies separately. Don't treat a vegetarian menu choice as an answer about which ingredients to avoid.
