Gold pen on a birthday invitation, with gold confetti, a champagne glass and a ribbon

You have settled the date, chosen the venue, and now you are looking at a blank page with no idea what to write. That is normal, because the wording seems simple but the right tone differs enormously between a children's party and a 70th birthday. Below you will find over 35 wording examples for a birthday invitation, grouped by real situations: children's parties, eighteenth birthdays, adult birthdays (funny or elegant), surprise parties, milestone birthdays organised by the family, and short messages for WhatsApp. Copy the one that fits, replace the name and date, and it is ready to send.

What the wording must not leave out

Whatever the tone, four things are essential: who is celebrating, the date, the time and the place. Anything else, the age, a joke, a note about gifts, the dress code, is a matter of style and of how much you want to personalise the message. Do not forget a clear request to confirm either, especially if you are booking a restaurant or need a fixed number for catering, and give it a real date rather than a vague "just let me know". If food is being served, the question about allergies and dietary preferences sits best in the same sentence as the request to confirm, so each guest only answers once.

Wording for children's parties (the parents invite)

At children's parties, the parents write and send the invitation, usually to other parents. The right tone is cheerful and playful, with the party theme stated clearly so each child arrives prepared (a costume, a colour, a favourite toy).

Saturday, 12 September, 4:00 pm, Curcubeu play centre, Cluj-Napoca

Ilinca is turning 7 and invites you to a Space themed party!
Saturday, 26 September, 5:30 pm, Astro Kids hall, Iași. We look forward to seeing you!

Wording for an eighteenth birthday

At an eighteenth, the invitation comes from the person celebrating rather than from their parents. The tone is young and direct, sometimes playful, with no formal phrases, because most guests are classmates and friends.

I am turning 18! Let's celebrate together, Saturday 12 September, 8:00 pm, at Terasa Panoramic, Sibiu.

18 years old, finally an adult (on paper at least). See you on Saturday, 4 July, 8:30 pm, Club Loft, Cluj-Napoca.

18 years, a pile of memories, and I cannot wait to add new ones with you. Sunday, 11 October, 7:00 pm, Restaurant Select, Oradea.

Funny wording for adults

Humour works best when it reflects the personality of the person celebrating and is addressed to a group of close friends. Avoid jokes that might embarrass more conservative relatives, if they are on the list too.

I am turning 40 and, to everyone's surprise, I can still dance. Come and check for yourself, Saturday 5 September, 7:00 pm, Restaurant Vila Verde, Pitești.

I have reached the age where "one more drink" also means a serious conversation with my back the next day. We are celebrating anyway! 30 August, 8:00 pm, Central summer garden, Arad.

50 years old and still not fully grown up. Come and celebrate that with me, Saturday 19 September, 7:30 pm, Restaurant Panoramic, Deva.

Apparently I am 35 now. Nobody is more shocked than I am. We are celebrating on Friday, 17 July, 8:00 pm, Beach Club, Mamaia.

I am turning 45 and I have officially decided to stop counting, but I still want cake and good music. Sunday, 6 September, 6:30 pm, Terasa Belvedere, Baia Mare.

Not every relaxed party needs a joke. If you want the direct tone alone, first names and second person, these work too. What makes them feel alive is one concrete detail, because a real particular beats ten adjectives:

Andrei is turning 40. Saturday, 12 September, from 8:00 pm, at Terasa Belvedere. Come as you are, we finish late.

I am turning 40 and celebrating in the garden, with a barbecue, a speaker and chairs borrowed from three neighbours.
Saturday, 12 September, from 6:00 pm, 14 Zorilor Street. Bring something warm, it cools down in the evening.
Tell me by 5 September whether you are coming and whether you are bringing someone.

Elegant wording for adults

For a more varied guest list or a more refined venue, a warm but restrained tone conveys the same joy without the risk of a joke landing badly.

I would like to invite you to celebrate 50 years of stories with me, Saturday 12 September, 7:00 pm, at Restaurant Panoramic. Please confirm by 1 September.

With great pleasure, I invite you to my 40th birthday celebration. Friday, 25 September, 7:00 pm, Salonul Regal, Iași.

I am turning 30 and would love to celebrate alongside the people dear to me. Saturday, 4 July, 6:30 pm, Conacul Heldsdorf, Brașov.

My husband is turning 45 and I want to give him a lovely surprise. I am expecting you with us on 18 October, 7:30 pm. Please keep the secret!

We would love to invite you to celebrate 35 years with family and close friends. Sunday, 20 September, 1:00 pm, Restaurant Select, Focșani.

For a more formal birthday dinner, the practical details read better on separate lines than inside one long sentence:

The Popescu family invite you to a dinner celebrating Mihai Popescu's 60th birthday.
Saturday, 12 September, 7:00 pm
Restaurant Panoramic, 3 Mare Street, Deva
Formal dress. Please confirm by 5 September.

I am turning 50 and I would like to celebrate with the people who matter to me.
Join me for dinner on Saturday, 12 September, from 7:00 pm, at Conacul Golescu.
Please confirm by 5 September so I can book the seats.

What holds those together: full sentences, practical details on separate lines and a restrained register. Formality comes from clear structure, not from decorative adjectives.

Wording for surprise parties

A surprise invitation has one extra job: not reaching the person it is for. Say clearly that it is a surprise and who it is for, that they know nothing about it, give the date and the place, ask explicitly for the secret to be kept, and set an arrival deadline. Put that deadline on the first line and leave out the time the party "starts", because the only hour a guest has to remember is the one by which they need to be inside.

Be at Restaurant Panoramic by 7:30 pm. Andrei turns 50 on 12 September and has no idea; he arrives at 8:00 pm. Please do not mention anything, not even as a joke.

We are throwing a surprise for Ioana, who turns 45 on 20 March and suspects nothing.
Come to Terasa Belvedere, where the doors close at 7:30 pm.
Keep it to yourself until that evening, and tell me from the page if you are coming.

On Saturday, 4 October, we are surprising our mother for her 60th birthday.
Come to Conacul Golescu by 12:30 pm. She arrives at 1:00 pm, convinced it is just the family going out for lunch.

Write the request for discretion out in the open, next to the date and the place, rather than leaving it in the middle of the text as a polite assumption. And if you send the invitation as a link, watch where you share it: a link posted in the family group reaches the guest of honour too.

Wording for milestone birthdays (organised by the family)

From 60 upwards, the organising often passes to the children or the family. The right tone is warm and full of gratitude, with the emphasis on the story rather than only on the party.

With much love, we invite you to celebrate our mother's 70th birthday with us. Sunday, 21 June, 1:00 pm, Restaurant Select, Iași. Your presence would mean the world to her.

Our father is turning 65 and we want to make his day unforgettable. We look forward to seeing you on 10 May, 1:30 pm, Restaurant Ateneu, Bacău, alongside everyone who matters to him.

With gratitude for all the beautiful years, we invite you to our grandmother's 60th birthday. Saturday, 3 October, 12:00 pm, a family lunch at Conacul Golescu, Argeș.

Our grandfather is turning 80, and we want to show him how much he means to us all. We are expecting you on Sunday, 27 September, 1:00 pm, Sala Palas, Iași.

We would love to invite you to celebrate 75 years of life and stories with our mother and grandmother. Saturday, 8 August, 1:30 pm, Restaurant Panoramic, Sibiu.

Short wording for WhatsApp

For the WhatsApp group, the message can be shorter than the full invitation: who, when, where, plus the link with all the details and the confirmation.

Choosing the tone for family, colleagues and mixed groups

Tone sits on two axes that are easy to mix up. The first is the party: a birthday dinner asks for a more restrained presentation than a Friday night get-together. The second is your relationship with each guest, because the register follows the reader and not just the occasion. In English it shows up in small signals: first names or full names, "Hi Andrei" or "Dear Mr and Mrs Ionescu", contractions or full forms. Choose them once and keep them steady through the whole text.

Say you are turning 40 and inviting forty people: your parents and two uncles, twelve colleagues from work, the rest friends from school. A single text for all of them is written, in effect, for the average of an uncle and an old school friend. I would keep one invitation, with the same information for everyone, and change only the message I send it with: warm and personal for family, cordial for colleagues, short and with the group's joke for friends. That way you do not have three versions of the details to update separately when the time moves.

The quick test: read the invitation imagining the most formal guest on your list is reading it. If nothing there would trip them up, the text is neutral enough for the rest of the list, and the joke goes into the separate message.

Asking for confirmations and updating details after you send

Ask politely, but with a date attached. "Please let us know by 5 September" is clearer than a request with no deadline, and it reads better than a flat "Reply by...". Put the menu and allergy question in the same place.

In a digital invitation this happens on the invitation page: guests confirm from their phone, and you see in a dashboard who has accepted, who has declined and who has not replied yet. Along with the answer you can collect whether the guest is an adult or a child and which menu they prefer: standard, vegetarian, vegan or the children's menu. For the aunt who phones instead of pressing buttons, you can record the confirmation on her behalf.

If something changes after you send, the time, the room, a detail about the venue, you edit the invitation and the change appears instantly at the same link, with nothing to resend. Editing sends no notification at all, though: a guest who never reopens the link never learns the details moved. So for an important change, send a short message as well, saying exactly what is different with the link underneath. Confirmations you already have stay as they are, with their menu choice and guest counts intact.

From wording to a complete invitation

Once you have chosen the right wording, the next step is to create the invitation, a page your guests open straight from their phones. Among the birthday invitation designs you will find options for every situation above, from children's parties to milestone birthdays, with a confirmation form included and a QR code ready to send on WhatsApp. You can also compare all the available styles there.

If you want to understand better how tone and etiquette change between an eighteenth, a 50th and milestone birthdays, the guide to the differences between 18, 50 and 70 goes into detail. And for the complete picture, from choosing a design to RSVP and the photos after the party, see the complete guide to online birthday invitations.

Frequently asked questions

What information must not be missing from the wording?

The name of the person celebrating, the date, the time and the place of the party. The rest, the age, a joke, a request to confirm, the dress code, are optional and depend on the tone you want to give the invitation.

Can I use these examples exactly as they are?

Yes. They are written to be copied directly, so change only the name, the age, the date and the place for your real details. You can also combine phrases from different examples if you want a unique result.

How do I shorten a longer text for a WhatsApp message?

Keep only who, when and where, plus the link to the full invitation. The details, the party theme, what guests should bring, the map, can sit on the digital invitation page rather than in the group message, so you do not overload it.

What do I write in a surprise party invitation?

Say clearly that it is a surprise, who it is for and that the person has no idea, then give the date, the place and the time by which everyone must already be inside, not the time the party "starts". Add an explicit request to keep the secret, written right next to the party details, and one clear place where people confirm.

Can I change a digital invitation after sending it?

Yes. You edit the invitation page and the change appears instantly at the same link, with nothing to resend. Editing sends no notification at all, so for an important change, such as the time or the venue, send a short message as well that says exactly what is different, with the link underneath.
