White wedding invitation with a gold pen and inkwell on ivory silk, ready for the wording to be written

You have chosen the date, booked the venue, and now you are stuck on the part that seemed simplest: what to write on the invitation. The good news is that you do not have to reinvent anything. Below you will find over 40 wording templates for a wedding invitation, grouped by tone, from classic and formal to modern, funny or religious, plus versions for parties without a ceremony, messages from the parents and announcements about a change of date. Copy the example that suits you, change the names and the date, and you are done.

What the wording must not leave out

Whatever the tone, four pieces of information are essential: the couple's names, the date, the time and the place. Beyond that, add only what helps your guest: how to confirm attendance, the dress code, whether children are welcome. Avoid a wall of text, because the invitation is read on a phone, in a few seconds.

Classic and formal wording

A classic tone conveys solemnity and respect, which suits a guest list spanning generations or a wedding with elegant dress. It includes polite formulas ("with great joy", "we have the honour"), full names and, ideally, both the ceremony time and the party time.

With great joy we invite you to be with us on the day we join our destinies.

Modern and simple wording

If you want something short, direct and full of personality, build on a single well made point. Drop the long formulas, keep the names, the date and the place, and leave a warm note inviting confirmation. Here, less really is more.

We are getting married!

Funny wording

Humour works when it reflects the couple rather than feeling forced. A joke about your relationship, the dance floor or the open bar relaxes the mood. Avoid irony that might offend grandparents or more conservative guests, and test the wording by reading it aloud.

After six years and three flats, she still has not changed her mind. So we are getting married.

We want you on the dance floor, not at the edge of it.

Religious wording

For couples of faith, a short scriptural quotation gives the invitation weight. State the church, the time of the religious ceremony clearly and, if you wish, the godparents' names. Check the exact reference of the quotation and keep a warm tone rather than a didactic one, because the invitation remains a joy rather than a sermon.

"What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." (Matthew 19:6)
With blessing, we join our lives.

Wording for the party only (no ceremony)

More and more couples hold the ceremony privately and invite everyone to the party alone. Be explicit in the first sentence, so guests know it is a party rather than a service. Give the start time, the place and, optionally, the dress code. The rest is music and good spirits.

We are holding the ceremony within the family. The party we are holding with you!

Wording from the parents or the godparents

When the invitation comes from the parents or the godparents, the phrasing changes: they are the ones inviting, and the couple are named in the third person. Sign with the family names or the godparents' names and keep a warm, formal tone. The couple's names obviously remain the stars of the text.

Wording that includes children ("and junior")

If you already have children, including them in the invitation is a warm gesture and increasingly appreciated. Add the little one's name next to yours, or let them "announce" the wedding. It is also a gentle signal that children are welcome at the event.

We are getting married, and this time there are three of us!

Wording for a change of date or details

Plans do change, and a clear announcement prevents confusion. Say straight away what has changed (the date, the time or the place), repeat the correct information and ask for reconfirmation if needed. With a digital invitation, the update appears instantly for everyone, without you resending anything.

How to turn the wording into a digital invitation

Once you have chosen the wording, the enjoyable part follows: putting it into a page your guests open straight from their phones. Instead of a plain message, you can choose from dozens of digital wedding invitation designs: pages with your names, the schedule, a map and an attendance confirmation button, plus a QR code to share on WhatsApp.

The great advantage: the wording is not set in stone. If the time or the place changes, you update once and the change appears instantly for every guest. You can adapt the whole range of digital invitations with the wording chosen above, in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

What should the wording of a wedding invitation contain?

Four pieces of information cannot be missing: the couple's names, the date, the time and the place of the event. Optionally you add the schedule (ceremony and party), how to confirm attendance, the dress code and a personal note. The rest is a matter of tone and style.

How long should the invitation wording be?

Short. Two to five lines are enough for a message or a digital invitation read on a phone. Extended details (a map, an hour by hour schedule, accommodation) sit better on a separate page than crammed into the main text.

How do I mention the dress code, or that children are not invited, elegantly?

Phrase them as a warm request rather than a rule. For attire: "We would love to see you in elegant dress." For no children: "We are planning an adults only evening and hope you understand." A polite tone avoids any awkwardness.

When should I send the wording to guests?

A save the date goes out four to six months ahead, and the full invitation six to eight weeks ahead, so guests can confirm in good time. With a digital invitation you can send the link at any point and update the details without resending anything.
